Victorian Royal Midlothian Yeomanry Officers Cavalry Helmet, belonging to The Earl of Dalkieth, Lieutenant Colonel of the Midlothian Yeomanry from 1856 – 1872 Black leather skull, front and back peaks, white metal and leather chin chain, backed with velvet attached with two lion head chin chain bosses and black horse hair plume. The regimental front a plate with a four-pointed star and a St Andrews cross, overlaid with the intertwined letters, VR, surrounded by the motto: Nemo me impune lacessit. This is enclosed within a crown-topped garter bearing the motto, Honi Soit Qui Mal y Pense. Around the circlet is a wreath of thistles, below which are four scrolls bearing the inscription, Royal Midlothian Yeomanry Cavalry, please note the gilt finish to parts of the badge.
